One of the biggest concerns about the consequences of poor mental health is suicide. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. In 2018, 48,344 people died by suicide with 1,400,000 attempts being recorded. There is no denying that suicide is still a prevalent concern that needs to be corrected, but for that to happen, there must be understanding as to why it is happening. Issues that cause the onset of suicidal thoughts could be the result of a mental illness, poverty, underemployment, low income, and substance abuse. Social Fragmentation

When looking at areas where there is social fragmentation, it is easy to see that these areas are being hit by high suicide rates. This is related to a person being cut off from society or feeling as though they are. Social fragmentation is associated with the underdevelopment or absence of connections between a culture or society and specific groups of people. It is a form of ostracization, in a way, and it causes people to feel very lonely and isolated. 

Loneliness is a driving force for why a person may consider suicide. There are many adverse effects of isolation, including how it can warp a person’s mind and perspective. When feeling these intense emotions of loneliness, many people start to breed thoughts that they are not worthy of affection or that no one cares about them. Eventually, they start to believe these negative thoughts. Because of this, feelings of self-worth will begin to diminish, life loses its meaning as those suffering succumb to negative thoughts and behaviors, often turning to substance abuse as a means to cope with the loneliness and isolation. 

Financial Woes

Things like poverty and underemployment can make these situations worse, as these hardships can spread feelings of social irrelevance or insignificance. Society is so dependent on money that if some people are not making as much as other people, they, again, begin to view themselves as inferior. As these feelings continue to grow, many continue to see themselves more and more as insignificant. That’s the harsh reality of it all. 

Rural Populations

It also doesn’t help that access to health care is so limited, if not absent, in most rural areas. People in rural or underdeveloped regions often go unchecked and treated, and these illnesses and negative thoughts continue to grow. People in rural communities often don’t have access to many resources to help them get better and they are left behind. A lack of insurance is also an issue. Even when a person can access a professional or doctor to help, they may not be able to afford it, which once again causes them to let their illnesses go ignored and untreated. 

The Tragic Tale of American Suicide

Suicide is becoming a genuine American tragedy. There are just not enough treatment programs or support systems available to help those who need it, where and when they need it. This means that collectively, people must continue having conversations about mental health issues and spreading awareness about the importance of suicide prevention. While talking isn’t going to be enough to completely fix the situation, it can be enough to get the ball rolling and move towards better solutions for helping those in need.
