When we take an honest look back at our addictions, we are often amazed at just how much of our time, money, and energy each day was spent on tracking down the next fix. Maintaining an addiction often is a full-time job in and of itself! This leaves a major void once we become sober.

This newfound free time, however, provides the perfect opportunity for us to pursue hobbies or interests we put off over the years in favor of our addictions.

Exercise

Exercise tends to be one of the most common hobbies chosen by those of us in early Alternatives to doing drugssobriety. The benefits are two-fold. First, most of us neglected our health in our addiction, so physical activity helps us to get back in shape. Second, exercise is a natural and healthy way to release endorphins in the brain giving us a natural high.

Music

A love of music certainly seems to be a common theme amongst those of us in sobriety. Early sobriety is the perfect chance to either learn an instrument, or pick back up an instrument in which we used to play. Just because we are sober does not mean we stop going to concerts, either. Attending shows with groups of sober friends is a great way for us to spend time.

Arts and Crafts

Another common theme seen in those in recovery tends to be creativity. A perfect avenue for this creativity is arts and crafts. This includes everything from painting, sketching, sculpting, etc. The extra free time that sobriety brings also can be filled with classes to learn any new arts and crafts.

Sports

Sports are another great hobby to take up in early sobriety. Many sober leagues exist, such as softball, football, etc for us to join. There is also no shortage of sober fantasy football leagues to join as well.

Cooking

It is not uncommon for our addiction to leave us with little time for anything more than fast food or TV dinners. Early sobriety is thus a great time to either start cooking again or learn how to cook well. Now that we are no longer destroying our bodies, we might as well start taking care of them!
