How the Search for a Cure Can Be the Wrong Way to Think

One such topic is the distinction between a cure and a treatment. For many people, they mean the same thing; they think that because something has been treated, that it is then cured. However, the fact is that these two terms are not synonymous, and it is essential to know this when going through recovery treatment. That’s right, treatment – not cure. Differentiating the two things can be enormous in understanding your situation and the work you need to do. Thinking that your mental illness is cured by going through treatment can be detrimental. You must know that treatment is an ongoing process, not a one-shot cure.
Curing a Disease Permanently
When something is cured, that means that it has been completely removed from a person. This means that there are no more symptoms and no issues that will spring back up. Once it is cured, it won’t bother you again. A cure is a definitive end to a problem. When available, they are fantastic. Unfortunately, there is no cure for most mental illnesses. You won’t be able to find a permanent solution for your anxiety or your depression. You won’t find a magical chemical that will rid your body of everything plaguing you. What you will find is a vast array of treatments, which are processes and actions that are implemented for a person’s condition to improve. A treatment is an ongoing process and is meant to help things improve, not get rid of issues completely. This is what you will find in the world of mental health recovery. The unfortunate truth is that there are no cures for mental illness; we have to continually work on ourselves to cope with what may come up. Beyond treatment, you won’t be entirely beyond the reach of mental illness. Mental illnesses will continue to affect you in various ways. Anxiety will keep causing you to panic, depression will continue to bring you down, and substance abuse may continue to tempt you. Treatment is designed to tackle that, but it won’t eliminate the issues completely.
Avoid Unreasonable Expectations
If you go into a recovery process expecting everything to be fixed, you may be disappointed and disheartened when you leave the program. Some of us reach a point where our issues are minimal, and it can feel like we aren’t bothered by mental health. However, even then, we still encounter struggles every now and then. When we leave recovery, we will have to keep facing our fears and dealing with our mental health. We are not going to be able to leave it behind. Our mental health issues are going to be something we have to carry for the rest of our lives. And that’s not a bad thing at all; it is not a reflection of you or who you are. You can embrace it and make yourself stronger. There is nothing wrong with accepting your mental health issues, and expecting your problems to be cured isn’t the way to approach recovery. Let go of your desire to escape psychological illness completely, and you will be able to succeed in life despite mental illness. You don’t need to cure your mental disease to have beaten it. Focus on understanding it and taking the steps you need to cope with it. Not letting your mental illness rule over you and define what you do is beating it. Embracing it is beating it.
